In the first match Brian Bailey (-2) and Krzysztof Laszkiewicz (+3) joined with young Louis Myatt (+7) to take on Edinburgh University at Ladywood. All three players performed well in their wins against University’s number 1 player Ian Johnston, the only opponent to turn out for the away team, as they secured a 5-0 win.
The match of the week, however, was a much tighter affair as Gary McDougall (-2), John Bald (+2) and Rachel Petrie (+7) hosted West Lothian 4. After losing the first 3 matches of the night the home side were in real trouble but with games 4 and 5 going the way of the home team, Gary and then John both winning in 4 ends, the match was back in the balance at 2-3. There was a further setback, however, when Rachel lost her 2nd match of the night resulting in West Lothian being one win away from the 2nd round but great wins for Gary and then Rachel tied the match leaving John to play the decider. Giving the West Lothian player 3 of a start things looked bleak for John as he lost the first end 11-2, but he then turned the match around comfortably winning the final three ends of the night to give the home side an excellent 5-4 comeback win.
An excellent week for the Club was rounded off by our 3rd Team moving into the second round with a 5-0 concession against Murrayfield.
In some rearranged League action, Penicuik 2 took the opportunity to catch up on a postponed match from earlier in the season as regulars Clive Liddiard and Brian Bailey were joined by Tony Brentnall, deputising for the absent Ian Woodyer, in their encounter against Meadowbank in Division 2. Tony turned out to be the player of the night as he won all 3 of his singles matches as the second team secured a terrific 9-1 away victory. Clive also won his 3, keeping his undefeated run going whilst Brian won 2. Clive and Brian also combined to win the doubles. The victory sees the 2nd Team leapfrog the 3rd team into second place in the Division, although the 3rd team have a game in hand on both our second Team and the current leaders of the Division, Edinburgh International 5.
