After a fairly miserable Week 2 of the new season the Club were looking to get back to the form of Week 1 as five of our seven teams took to the table.

In Division 1, Greig McDonell returned in place of Colin Green and he joined forces with David Melrose & Iain Johnstone as they took on West Lothian 3 at home. Only two matches on the night went beyond straight sets, both involving David - he lost out in five to Stuart Gibson and won in 4 against Keith MacKay. A fairly straightforward night saw the home side run out 9-1 winners.

In Division 2, James & Abby Wighton were again joined by Julian Taylor playing up from Div 3 as they faced West Lothian 5. Having lost their opening fixture to Murrayfield, the Penicuik side needed to bounce back and bounce back they did recording an excellent 10-0 win. Julian commented at the end that this was the first match he'd played in his short league career where he was on the right side of a 10-0 win - if only he could have been bothered playing for his own team two nights later....

So 2 nights after Julian's terrific performance in playing up, Team 4 had the enjoyment of a Friday night visit to Edinburgh University in Division 3 - Julian wouldn't be seen dead playing TT on a Friday night so he was replaced by Phil Daly who joined Sonny Taylor and Tony Brentnall. This was one of those matches where the scoreline flattered - Three 5th end deciders and another three which went to four ends. The visitors won the lot, however, as Team 4 also recorded an excellent 10-0 win.

In Division 4, Team 5 have enjoyed a good start to the season in the absence of their secret weapon, John Bald. According to Ratings Central, John is Team 5's best player - he was back on Wednesday night but having not picked up a bat since the summer, a good decision probably to leave him on the sidelines! Haddington 4 were the visitors, and they were looking to continue their good start to the season. This was a tight match - after Craig won match 1, Millie came from 2-1 down to win in five tight sets, 11-8 in the 5th before Stuart then lost 11-8 in the fifth. Match 4 saw Millie go to yet another 5th set and she held her nerve to squeeze home 12-10 before Craig and Stuart both then lost, you guessed it, in five ends, both falling to 11-8 defeats in those deciding ends. When Craig and Millie then lost the doubles the home side were down for the first time on the night at 4-3. Millie rounded off an excellent night to bring the scores level before the crucial win of the night went to Stuart with an 11-9 fifth end win against his opposite number. It was then left to Craig to deliver the winning match which he did in some style, the only match of the night that was decided in 3 straight sets. A terrific 6-4 win keeps Team 5 at the top of the Division 4 table - will Mr Bald ever get a game??

And finally in Week 3, Team 7 (Phil Daly, Kristian Skotzen & Hannah McDonell) faced Haddington 5 at Ladywood. The first three matches of the night saw a win for Phil, followed by a win for Hannah before a loss for Kristian. The next 3 matches were identical - a win for Phil, another for Hannah and a loss for Kristian. When the doubles went the way of Haddington, they trailed 4-3 going into the last 3 matches of the night. Young Liam Govan then took out Kristian to spoil his night completely before the attention in the hall turned to a classic between Hannah and Martin Hayman. Hannah raced into a 2-1 lead and was 10-6 up in the fourth - it was all over - that seemed to be what Martin thought as well as he suddenly decided just to go for all out attack - back to 10-8 and the most outrageous running forehand of the night (in any of the 4 matches played) somehow found the corner of the table as groans of disbelief were heard from the Penicuik contingent in the hall - he went on to win 14-12 and at the change of ends in the final end was 5-1 up. But back came Hannah to 9-9 before Martin's 65 years of experience resulted in two heavy pushes high into Hannah's backhand side - how on earth did he win that the crowd were heard to sigh! Unfortunately, or fortunately for Penicuik, son David couldn't quite get the win for the visitors as Phil won the last match of the night for a hard fought 5-5 draw. (Martin was still speaking about that forehand at the Junior Assessment tournament yesterday!!)

So a terrific week for the Club - 4 wins and 1 draw. Undefeated in singles play this week were Greig, Iain, Abby, James, Millie, Phil, Julian, Sonny & Tony. Jings, this is going to be a difficult one. Greig and Iain were the only two players not to drop an end and Greig also won the doubles so clearly this week's Player of the Week has to be...... Oh ok only joking. A text from Phil demanded that he get this week's award - and he's got a point - 6 wins out of 6 in singles - three for his own team and 3 whilst playing up in Div 3. But according to Hannah it was his fault they lost the doubles and didn't therefore win the match - sorry Phil! There could only really be one winner this week, 3 terrific wins without which the team would not have won and showing some great mental strength to win close 5 end tussles when the team needed it most - well done to Millie.

And finally to our controversy of the Week - let's have a go at ourselves for a change - see it's not just other Clubs that are in the firing line!

Wednesday saw 4 matches on at Ladywood, as will happen regularly this season. It's OK though the Dogs have been sent away with their tails between their legs (their obedience problems were clear for everyone who played at Ladywood last season to hear) and we have the whole hall available on Match nights. Well, when we say we have the whole hall, we have that from about 6.50pm after the Badminton is finished. Add on at least 10 minutes to get the tables out of the cupboard and we can maybe get set up by just after 7pm. But hey not everyone cares - if you can get there early enough you can get set up for your own match and then others can watch as the prima donnas of Team 1 wander in and claim one of the tables set up in the available half of the hall!! The result is chaos at the beginning of the night according to James "Mr Nice" Wighton. Now if James is annoyed there really is a problem!

24 players in the hall on Wednesday, make that 25 as Gary came along for a practice (that's a Thursday night Gary!) and three tables set up by the match start time of 6.30pm. Away teams quite rightly probably thinking what is going on as they hang about unable to get a knock up until after 7pm - anyone who arrives early to be ready to play by 6.30 really will be a bit cheesed off 40 minutes or so later! So why do we have a 6.30 start time?? It would please our friends from West Lothian (not to mention a few of our own members) if we pushed this back to 7pm. Whilst we will still be thrown out at 10pm surely there is enough room at Ladywood with the whole hall available to get matches onto two tables if necessary - so what if we don't have enough barriers to have more than about 5 tables up! Who needs barriers? (If anyone want's to donate any to us we'd be most appreciative!) Lack of organisation seems to be the biggest problem. Did no one think about this before the season started? If only Brian's Shower curtain technology had worked we could have divided the hall up in to four lovely compartments. The lack of organisation is one thing but it also leaves a feeling that there is a lack of consideration for everyone within the Club, never mind the lack of consideration for our opponents. And for that we apologise to anyone who was left feeling unwanted on Wednesday night!

Not to worry though, Mr Nice has come up with a solution - seemingly he's going to get to Ladywood by 6pm each week, claim the half hall available and let the other teams wait for a change!! How rude!!

After a successful start to the season for the Club, all 7 of our Teams were in action in Week 2.

Team 1 faced last season's unluckiest team, Haddington 1 in Division 1. After a loss to a 15 year old girl in Week 1, Team Captain, Greig was dropped and replaced by Colin Green who joined David Melrose and Iain Johnstone. Carsten Giebeler was the star performer on the night, not losing an end as he strolled through his 3 matches. There were two crucial 5 end games which turned the match in favour of Haddington - David fought back from 2-0 down against Russell Firth only to lose in the 5th, whilst Iain came back from 2-1 down to lose 11-7 in the 5th v Lorenas Vismantas. Those defeats resulted in both winning one singles match whilst Colin added 2. The doubles was therefore crucial to the overall result. Colin & David played some excellent stuff (including an 11-0 granny) to salvage a point for the Penicuik side. A point lost rather than one gained according to the man who was hiding in Fife with Team 7 as the drama unfolded!

The theme of Week 2 seems to have been Penicuik v Murrayfield as these two clubs met in Divisions 1, 2, 3 & 4. Team 2 (Krzysztof Laszkiewicz, Gary McDougal and Charlie Brindley) started their Division 1 campaign against Lynn Somerville, Alex Asyunkin and Jamie Mullineaux at Ladywood. Other than 2 wins for Charlie the only matter of interest for the home side was the description of the team lineups given by Murrayfield on their FB page. Each team seemingly fielded "a grizzled veteran, a young attacking player and a predominantly defensive chopper." OK Murrayfield we can take a joke but that's just cruel! We can accept the grizzled veteran and defensive chopper but who is our mysterious young attacker?? Did we field a last minute replacement? Nope - we've checked the scorecard! Mr Scrabble Man has been described as many things but attacking is fairly low down the list - as for young???? If nothing else it gave us a laugh after a disappointing 7-3 defeat.

Meanwhile in Division 2, James & Abby Wighton were joined by Julian Taylor in the absence of both Chris Markey & Ian Hislop. Abby performed well with 2 wins on the night and Julian chipped in with an excellent 5 end win v John Yau. The star of the night, however, was in Murrayfield colours as Leandro Golinski had an undefeated night for the second consecutive week. Might we suggest that his start of season rating was perhaps on the low side - 6 wins out of 6 and a 160 point increase in his rating already! Another 7-3 victory for Murrayfield.

In Division 3, Team 4 would surely buck the trend of losing to Murrayfield opposition as Julian Taylor, Tony Brentnall and Sonny Taylor looked to build on their good win in Week 1. 2 wins for both Sonny and Julian had the match finely poised. Unfortunately, youngster Haydn Jackson had other ideas, undefeated on the night in both singles and doubles - he continues to show terrific promise for the future as he helped his side to a 6-4 victory.

Three Murrayfield matches so far, 3 defeats - Team 6 weren't going to allow a clean sweep for the Edinburgh based outfit. After an injury blow to Rachel Petrie ruled her out for the next few weeks up stepped Club Secretary and true grizzled veteran, Brian Bailey. A last minute registration approved by the League and he was straight in the team to join new boy (not really a boy!) Craig Linton and young Adam Woodhouse in their first match in Division 4. No way could we lose this encounter. Brian had thought long and hard about registering this year - due a hip operation soon and last season being completely ruined by the pain he suffered he was rightly worried about playing competitive TT. Buoyed by El President'e words of wisdom (just don't move and push everything, I've made a career out of that tactic) Brian took to the table in Match 1 of the night v Peter Nettleton - Brian's hip held up well - unfortunately what he had forgotten about was his recent history of tennis elbow. I thought it was cleared up he was heard to say - Not so apparently! Acutely painful by the time he'd played 4 sets in his first match he had to withdraw from the night! Add forgetfulness to his list of ailments! We wonder what the chances are of a refund of Brian's League fees??!! Craig Linton's first ever League experience was, however, a real positive - undefeated in singles play in a 7-3 defeat.

With Murrayfield ruining our week it was left to Team 5 to provide some relief with a trip to Haddington 5. Craig Johnson fresh from his training camp in Japan (he says it was a work related trip - we don't believe him) was undefeated and Millie Bennett added two good wins. The doubles, as is often the case, was to prove crucial to the outcome. Millie and Craig combined for an excellent 3-1 win to secure a 6-4 victory. Joint top of Div 4 after two matches - the way this week has gone maybe we need to take a screenshot for posterity reasons!

And finally to Team 7. A two player team (George Wilson & Hannah McDonell) travelled to Inverkeithing as Storm Ali threatened to cause a divorce in the McDonell household - you're going where in this weather, Mrs M was heard to shout!! Kristian couldn't make it because of his wedding anniversary - we've heard some dodgy reasons for missing TT but really?? Does he still have romance in his marriage? Does Mrs Skotzen not understand the importance of League matches? Phil Daly, meanwhile, was blatantly breaching the Club rule of not taking holidays in the League season! A 6-4 defeat resulted for the away side - George having won his 3 in Week 1 whilst playing up against Fife for Team 5 could only manage 1 win whilst Hannah won 2 singles and played some super stuff to secure a doubles victory as well. Oh what might have been had a full team been fielded - do either of the absentees feel guilty? Seemingly not!

Player of the week is a three horse race this week - Craig Johnson and Craig Linton were undefeated in singles play but add to that Hannah who had her best night in her short League career. It was Craig L's first ever League match - surely that puts him ahead in the running - hold on - where's he going for the next fortnight? A holiday! Great start Craig but you're chances of Player of the Week are gone! Craig J also won the doubles in securing a 6-4 victory for his team - but hold on - he's just back from Japan and did he bring any cheap TT stuff back for the Club or for El Presidente?? Well done Hannah - more wins in the first two weeks of this season than in the whole of last season - there's no bias here!

And finally to our Controversy of the Week. Back to one of our favourites this week - postponements! Our Team 6 are already in trouble. Two injured players, one player on holiday, two youngsters left that have to rely on an adult to get them to away matches and two players from Team 7 who aren't allowed to play up for them - this coming week's match has already been postponed. The League have tightened even further the rule on postponements:

"No team (other than EUTTC) shall be allowed more than one postponement request in each half of the season without the express consent of the Match Sub-Committee which consent will be given only should the request be the result of circumstances outwith the control of the requesting team."

Do Team 6's circumstances fall within the above definition? Who knows? What about Haddington 1 who we played this week - they postponed their fixture and we played them at Ladywood on Wednesday instead of Monday at Haddington - is that their "one" postponement request for this half of the season? Our Team 7 took the view that the rule on postponements is so difficult to comply with that even though Fife were gracious enough to offer us the opportunity to postpone, it would be easier just to play with two players. Given that any rearranged fixtures are meant to be played within 4 weeks, we think the League are actually just trying to bring in through the back door our proposal from a couple of seasons ago - Just do away with postponements! They're more hassle than they're worth. Mind you that presumes that there will be any enforcement of this rule - watch this space...

On the table this week, there was a dispute over an umpiring call in the doubles played at Inverkeithing. George was faulted for serving into the wrong half of the table - he felt the serve was bang on the line - chalk dust he screamed - everyone else on the table was clear it was a fault - the umpire had no doubt - if only he'd had his yellow cards with him - how dare a player challenge such a decision - the umpire was none other than El Presidente - and everyone knows he's never wrong!

Hopefully Week 3 will see more of our teams return to winning ways.

ELTTL 2018-19 - Week 1 Report

Picture
Well here we go again - the 2018/19 League Season is underway and Week 1 saw four of our 7 Teams in action - the introduction of free weeks into the Calendar saw Teams 2, 3 & 6 have a week off.

After their relegation from the Premier Division, Team 1's team line-up was up in the air just a matter of a couple of weeks ago. Greig McDonell was dropping down to Division 4 to play with daughter, Hannah; David Melrose wasn't playing at all and Colin Green was undecided. The only certainty in the team was Iain Johnstone who had taken a break from TT last season. Persuaded to not try and protect his rating, however, Greig came back into the fold and dragged David along with him. Colin also registered to make a 4 man team for this season. Wednesday night saw their Division 1 opener against North Merchiston 3 at Ladywood. With Ken Benjamin's predictions of a good season for Team 1 ringing in their ears Greig showed how much rubbish Ken talks by losing his first match of the season 11-9 in the fifth to the ever improving 15 year old Amelia Norbury - it looked like being a long night. Fortunately for Team 1, Iain who was in excellent form and David, despite trying to concoct a way of losing to Graham Booth, both went through the night undefeated as the 1st Team started their campaign with a 9-1 win.

In Division 3, a new look Team 4 of Julian Taylor, Tony Brentnall & Sonny Taylor made the long trip to Inverkeithing to take on Fife 3. Tony's last match for the club was some 20 months ago and it's great to have him back. Sonny started his season well with a crucial 13-11 win in the fifth end of Match 2 on the night and at 3-0 up it looked like plain sailing for the visitors, however, two 5th end losses in the next three matches meant Penicuik went into the doubles at 4-2 up. Looking a bit like strangers (they are - this was their first ever doubles match), Tony and Julian looked in trouble at 2-0 down but they roared back to pick up the win in 5 ends. Another fifth end win in match 8 secured both points for Team 4 and Sonny rounded the night off with yet another deciding end win in match 10 - a 7-3 win for the visitors but this truly was one of those matches which could have gone the other way and swung on just a few crucial points - 7 of the 10 matches on the night went to deciding fifth ends.

Team 5 started their Division 4 campaign with Craig Johnson swanning off to Japan (work supposedly). Who would have thought going to Japan would actually be quicker than waiting on the League providing us with more than 3 new TT balls per team for this season! There will be no excuse if he gets back empty handed, So in Craig's absence and given that John Bald is yet again missing the start of the season contemplating what it's all about in some sunny part of Europe, George from Team 7 played up with Millie & Stuart Bennett. Despite a couple of his teammates suggesting that George shouldn't try too hard (team 7 v team 5 match will be fun) George was having none of it and proceeded to win his 3 singles - maybe he should have played the doubles as well, which was lost by Millie & Stuart. 5-3 up with two matches to be played - step forward Millie who played some excellent attacking TT to win in 3 straight sets to secure the 2 points for the home side. Stuart also played his part - unlucky to lose his first match in 5 ends, he held his nerve in match 5 to win a tight five ender which helped secure the overall win by 6 games to 4.

And finally in Week 1, Team 7 (the only side to be unchanged from last season) took on North Merchiston 6 at home. With Team Captain George trying to keep his eye on proceedings from the other side of the hall, Phil Daly, Kristian Skotzen & Hannah McDonell tried to improve on their 7-3 loss from last season. This proved to be another tight match. Surely the experience of Phil would see off 12 year old Aidan Davis. At 2-0 down Phil looked bewildered and was seeking some advice from his nominated coach (honest - we obeyed this new rule) - the words "keep it away from his forehand" were shouted loudly across the hall. We'll need to check but there's maybe some doubt as to whether Phil realised he was playing another left-hander! 1-0 to NM. From 2-0 up, the youngest player on show at the Club, 11 year old Hannah then lost to Tim Hely 12-10 in the fifth - she was a little upset by the loss, only cheered up when she asked old dad how he'd got on against Amelia - a smile seemed to reappear on her face! No worries though, Kristian has been looking amazing over the off-season - a 3-0 loss to Kai Hely - what was happening - 3-0 down and up against it. Phil recovered to win match 4 before a mammoth encounter between Kristian and Tim - 11-4, 7-11, 11-7, 2-11 - a topsy turvy four ends were followed by a 19-17 win for Tim in the deciding end - that's got to hurt! Add to that Hannah's second 5th end loss of the night and suddenly the team were 5-1 down and virtually out. The doubles saw Hannah & Kristian go into another fifth end - surely Penicuik would win one of these tight games? Eh maybe not - an 11-9 defeat and the match was over as a contest. Perhaps as a result of the game being over, all three players seemed to then relax and play their best TT of the night - straight sets wins for Hannah and Phil and a five end win for Kristian over NM's best player on the night, Aidan. A 6-4 loss which could so very easily have gone the other way.

That Team 7 Report is to appease George (last season's most improved Penicuik player - well done to him by the way) who continually moans about not getting enough column inches in these weekly reports. Just a pity George wasn't playing - back to normal next week no doubt!

And so to our first Player of the Week Award for the new Season. David, Iain & George were all undefeated. David played and won the doubles as well - in fairness neither Iain nor George played so we can't really use that as the deciding factor. George was playing up and so the pressure was off him really so he's out of the running! David was awarded the man of the match award by North Merchiston but we don't pay attention to what other Club's think - there could only be one winner this week - after a year out Iain proved his worth to the Club with a terrific first night back. His win against Eddie Scott contained some brilliant rallies and was crucial to keeping the momentum going in Team 1's favour - well done Iain.

And finally how we've missed our regular Controversy of the Week section over the summer!! We're not going to start the season with anything too heavy - just a very brief look at one of the new rules brought into play this season:

"Only a fellow member of a player’s team for that fixture or nominated non-playing captain/coach may offer playing advice to a player once a fixture has commenced. Any such advice must be limited to one minute between games......"

League play is a team game - let's take Team 7's match this week as an example (see George - even more column inches!) - they enjoyed having team huddles last season in between ends - it shows a great team spirt - young Hannah wouldn't say a thing in the huddle but would stand and listen and feel part of the discussion, whether it was advice or just general encouragement. This rule now seems to prevent that from happening. Or maybe the whole team (and others) can stand in a huddle so long as only one person is doing the talking? Like many clubs these days we end up playing on two tables to get finished on time - that results in two teammates being on one table (playing and umpiring) leaving another on their own. Youngsters especially often need some encouragement or help in between games. It's not possible to identify at the beginning of a match in these circumstances who is going to be available. We do wonder what the rationale behind this rule is? Not many people we have spoken to think it makes sense. And then there's the more interesting question of enforceability? Are any teams really going to be bothered if at the change of the first end David goes and has a word with Greig about moving his feet more than an inch and then at the end of the second he's given up trying to educate on such pointless matters and Iain tries to tell him something else?? Who cares? Why is it an issue? And if any team were to object or raise it as an issue what is the punishment? We're looking forward to the first time this raises it's head this year - last week no one cared - maybe no one in the hall actually knew about the rule!! Let's hope it stays that way!

Ah it's good to be back - all 7 teams in action next week - maybe our first controversial moment on the table will happen then.....

Pre-Season Friendly v West Lothian

After a visit to West Lothian last September, this year saw the Bathgate Club travel to Penicuik on Wednesday 5th September. 35 players in total competed and it was great to see the hall at Ladywood so busy. A great atmosphere and some great matches.

Four matches were played in League format. Ros Beck, John MacLeod and the ever improving young Jamie Toner took on Louis McLeod, Rachel Petrie & Kristian Skotzen in a hotly contested affair. At 3-3 going into the doubles, all was to play for. A five setter went the way of WL and they never looked back winning the last 3 matches for a 7-3 win.

That win was cancelled out by the home side's Gary Woodhouse, James Wighton & Julian Taylor as they comfortably defeated Barrie Hills, Holly Stephen and Graham Honeyman by a 9-1 scoreline, Graham picking up the solitary win for the visitors.

Match 3 saw David MacRae, Jordan Welsh & Tommy Toner take on Adam Woodhouse, Craig Linton & Hannah McDonell. 2 five setters in the first three games of the night went the way of WL and they never looked back from those wins recording an 8-2 victory.

With WL ahead, Match 4 saw Craig Johnson, Mille Bennett & Sonny Taylor take on Steve Hastings, Bob Lander & Sean Lennon - hang on a minute - Sean who?? Sean was drawn out the hat to make up the numbers for WL and no one can say that he didn't put his all into the matches - He certainly got his money worth - all three games were decided deuce in the fifth - a 12-10 win against Sonny, a loss by the same score to Craig and a 17-15 loss in the fifth against Millie. Bob picked up the only other win for the visitors in an 8-2 victory for Penicuik.

So across the board the score was 22-18 to Penicuik.

The other players on the night played in two round robin groups. In the first of those groups Steve Collins and Keith McKay played a total of 6 matches against Penicuik opposition (David Melrose, Gary Mcdougal & Abby Wighton) and they recorded 3 wins from those 6 matches for a 3-3 draw. For what it's worth after everyone played everybody, David came out on top, Steve 2nd, Gary 3rd, Keith 4th & Abby 5th.

Penicuik therefore held a 25-21 lead going into the final 6 player group. In that group, Andy Honeyman and Stuart Gibson played a total of 8 matches against Penicuik players (Colin Green, Iain Johnstone, Ian Hislop and at the last minute thinking he needed some match practice, Greig McDonell!). There were some cracking tight matches but in the end only Stuart added to the West Lothian score with a win against Ian Hislop. The group win was battled out between teammates Colin & Greig, with Colin coming back from 2-1 down to win in the fifth set.

A cracking night at Ladywood and it was great to see the full hall used to it's potential with 10 tables on the go. The invisible Trophy was retained by the home side - the final score on the night was Penicuik 32 West Lothian 22.

Thanks to all from West Lothian who made the journey through and to all our guys who took part - a fun night played in a good atmosphere (mainly) and that's what these occasions are meant to be - Good luck to our West Lothian opponents in the League - let battle commence....
