ELTTL WEEK 2 REPORT

28/9/2014

Week 2 of the Edinburgh and Lothians League saw 4 of our 5 teams in action.

In the Premier Division, after a disappointing 8-2 defeat away to West Lothian, things didn't look like getting any easier as the first team came up against last season's runners-up, Murrayfield 1. Although two matches were lost in tight five enders, the 1st team were never really in the match as they went down to their second consecutive 8-2 defeat with Greig and Colin both winning 1. Iain again showed some positive signs and hopefully his first win will arrive soon.

In Division 2, the second team's undefeated run dating back to September 2013 was put to the test against Corstorphine 4. A win was expected but with their number 1, Clive Liddiard out through injury, the team knew they had to perform well to keep the run going and at 3-1 up it looked like being another good night for the 2nd team. Thereafter, however, matters took a turn for the worse as Penicuik lost the next 4 matches to go 5-3 down. Brian Bailey won match 9 to give the team a chance of a draw but Gary McDougal, deputising for Clive, couldn't find the form needed to win the final match of the night as the undefeated run came to an end with a 6-4 defeat. Brian won 2 while Ian and Gary won 1 each. The Club are hopeful that Clive's injury will not keep him out long and the 2nd team can bounce back to winning ways next week.

The 2nd Team's loss gave the 3rd team an opportunity to get ahead of their club colleagues in the Division. After a solid 6-4 away win in week 1, James Wighton, Gary McDougal and Abby Wighton faced their first home match of the season against Murrayfield 6. At 2-0 down things didn't look very promising but from that point the trio didn't look back wining 7 of the 8 remaining matches for an excellent 7-3 win. Gary won all his 3 matches, James 2 and Abby, who combined with Gary to also win the doubles, won 1. Although very early in the season, the result puts the 3rd Team equal top of the Division.

Penicuik 4 gave Gavin Hunter his first outing of the season as he joined forces with Neil Hayes and Kris Laszkiewicz in their away tie to Fife 2. Neil was unfortunately not on form as he lost his 3 matches but with Gavin and Kris both winning 2 the important match of the night was the doubles where Gavin and Kris combined to win 3-1 resulting in the fourth team's first point of the season as they battled to a 5-5 draw.

Penicuik’s 1st Team opened their campaign in the Premier Division with a difficult away match against West Lothian 1. Whilst the experienced Greig McDonell and Colin Green returned to action this year for Penicuik, Iain Johnstone was making his debut in the top tier of the League having played in Division 2 last season. Despite the big step up, Iain performed well and was unlucky not to come away with any wins. It was positive that Iain did not look out of his depth and showed promise by winning ends in all 3 of his matches. However, on a disappointing night for the first team, Team Captain Greig was the only winner for the visitors winning two out of his three matches in their 8-2 defeat.

After winning promotion and going through Division 3 undefeated last year Penicuik 2 had their first taste of Division 2 action with a home match against an experienced Police Team. Clive Liddiard who was the League player of the year for the 2013/14 season joined forces with Brian Bailey and Ian Woodyer for their opener. Clive continued his excellent form from last season by winning all three of his matches whilst Brian won 2 and combined with Clive in the doubles for an important win, resulting in a winning 6-4 start for the 2nd Team.

Also in Division 2, Penicuik 3 had an excellent away win at Corstorphine. James Wighton was the player of the night for Penicuik winning all 3 of his singles matches. With the match tied at 4-4 Abby Wighton gave the Team an unassailable 5-4 advantage by winning 11-8 in the deciding end of her match before dad James finished the night on a high by winning deuce in the fifth against Corstorphine's number 1. Gary McDougal picked up 2 wins to give the team a 6-4 win and an encouraging start to the new campaign.

Not such good news, however, for the 4th Team in their Division 3 encounter against West Lothian. Phil Daly, Neil Hayes and Kris Laszkiewicz could all only manage one win as the fourth team went down 7-3 at home to their Bathgate based opponents in their opening match of the campaign.

Finally, in Week 1, Penicuik’s new fifth team had their first experience of competitive League play in Division 4. With all of Penicuik’s players making their debuts, it looked like being a difficult night for the Team against Murrayfield 8. Far from it, however, as the home team romped home to an 8-2 victory, Gregory Leplatre winning all 3 of his matches, backed up by two of the Club’s promising youngsters, Luke Hennessey and Louis Myatt who both won two of their 3 matches. Gregory combined with Luke to win the doubles in what turned out to be the Club’s best result of the week.
