ELTTL Week 6 Report

Week 6 of the Edinburgh & Lothians Table Tennis League saw four of Penicuik’s five Teams in Action.

After a very disappointing start to the season, Penicuik’s 1st Team of Greig McDonell, Colin Green and Iain Johnstone travelled to face the defending Premier League Champions, North Merchiston 1. The 1st Team went into the match as heavy underdogs but after Greig won the first match of the evening with something to spare, the defending champions were under some pressure. After Colin lost in 4 to Glyn Eggar, the key match of the evening turned out to be game 4 between Greig and Merchiston’s number 1, Cameron Hussain. When Greig took the match into a decider, it looked as if an upset could be on the cards. The final end went Hussain's way as he squeezed home 12-10 to give Merchi a 3-1 advantage. A win for Colin and a comfortable win in the doubles for Greig and Colin kept the match alive at 3-4 going into the last 3 singles of the night but when both Greig and Colin lost their final matches, the chance of at least a draw was lost. Iain did well to win the last match of the night as the 1st team went down to a narrow 6-4 defeat.

After a controversial win in their last match, Penicuik 2’s Clive Liddiard and Brian Bailey were joined by Abby Wighton deputising for the absent Ian Woodyer in their encounter against Murrayfield 7 in Division 2. After being out for a couple of weeks with injury, Clive's return certainly bolstered the home team's chances and his rich vein of form continued as he won all 3 of his singles matches to make it 9 out of 9 in his undefeated start to the season. Abby and Brian both won two of their 3 singles matches as the second team enjoyed a terrific 7-3 win which lifts them into 3rd place in the division, 3 points behind leaders Edinburgh International but with a game in hand.

In Division 3, the introduction of Tony Brentnall to the fourth team has clearly made them a much stronger proposition. Tony joined forces with Krzysztof Laszkiewicz and Neil Hayes as they faced Corstorphine 5 in Division 3. Tony again showed a great deal of promise as he was in excellent form winning all 3 of his singles matches. After a number of years away from the sport, his first two matches back have resulted in 5 wins out of 6 and hopefully he can only get better. With Kris and Neil both winning 1 of their singles the team held an unassailable 5-4 lead as they faced the final match of the night, the doubles. Tony and Kris looked to have done enough after winning the fourth end 11-2 to square the game and to swing the momentum in the home team's favour, however, Corstorphine's Jim Lee and John Paul Smith had other ideas as they dug in to win the decider 11-5 resulting in a 5-5 match scoreline - a good point for the visitors and a point lost perhaps for Penicuik.

In Division 4, Penicuik 5 took on one of the new clubs to the League, Haddington. Rachel Petrie joined forces with youngsters, Louis Myatt and Kathryn McKenzie for the home side. The 5th Team always knew this season would be a learning curve for them and when young players come up against awkward experienced opponents as they did when Haddington visited it's always going to be difficult.  None of the home team could come to terms with their more experienced opposition, although both Rachel and Kathryn token of their matches to a deciding end, as the team went down to their heaviest defeat of the season with a 10-0 loss.

Week 5 of the season saw our 1st, 3rd and 4th Teams in Action, all playing tricky ties away from home.

In the Premier Division, Greig, Colin and Iain travelled to face Edinburgh International 1 encouraged by their previous week's comfortable win against University. The optimism didn't last long, however, as the home team raced into a 3-0 lead. EI 1 were arguably strengthened by Matthew Robertson playing up in the place of Russell Firth and he disposed of Colin in 3 comfortable ends. IN Greig's crucial 1st match, he looked in control at 2-1 up against Babu Valaguruvan, but lost both the 4th and 5th ends 9-11. Iain similarly looked good having taken the 1st end against Marek Domagala but lost a tight 2nd before being overpowered in the 3rd and 4th ends. The match was gone in no time as the next 3 matches were also lost by the visitors and it was left to Greig and Colin to win the doubles and their final matches to give some respectability to the scoreline as they went down to a disappointing 7-3 defeat.

There was much better news in Division 2 where our 3rd Team of James, Abby and Gary continued their excellent start to the season with a win against Murrayfield 7. The team were never behind in the match but when Murrayfield pulled the score back to 4-4 the match was again in the balance. It was left to Gary and James to win the final two matches to give the visitors an excellent 6-4 win. All three players contributed with two wins each and Abby was unfortunate not to win all her matches as she came closest to beating Murrayfield's top player, James Forrest, just losing out in a tight final end. The win keeps intact the 3rd Team's 100% record at the top of the Division.

In Division 3, a new look 4th Team took on a strong ESC team. Captain Phil rang the changes as in to the side came Gregory Leplatre and debutant, Tony Brentnall to join forces with
Krzysztof Laszkiewicz. On paper a very strong looking side but unfortunately, it was only Tony, coming back to the sport after a number of years away, that could find any form as he had an excellent debut winning two of his 3 singles matches. Greg found the step up from Division 4 difficult but joined with Kris for a good win in the doubles as the 4th Team went down to a 7-3 defeat.

Week 4 of the League was a very quiet one for the Club. With the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams all having a free week, the attention turned to Penicuik 4 & 5 in Divisions 3 & 4 respectively.

In Division 3 the 4th Team of Phil Daly, Kris Laszkiewicz and Neil Hayes faced a home tie against North Merchiston 3. Having picked up 1 point from their first two matches, the home team knew that they desperately needed a win against North Merchiston 3 to keep them in touch with those teams in the top half of the Division. Kris was the player of the night as he won all 3 of his singles matches and with Phil winning 2 the match came down to the final match of the night (played out of sequence) - the doubles! Kris and Phil joined forces against Anna Porsch and Slaw Bess for Merchiston. After an easy win in the first end, 11-4 Kris and Phil looked in control. However, the North Merchiston duo then won the next two ends before the momentum swung again in the fourth end with an 11-5 win for the home team. In a tight deciding end, Kris and Phil held their nerve for an 11-9 win to give the home team their first win of the season.

In Division 4, Penicuik’s 5th Team found it hard going in their match against North Merchiston 4. Gregory Leplatre joined forces with Luke Hennessey and Lewis Baldock, the latter making his competitive debut in the League. Gregory won 2 of his 3 matches to continue his good form, only losing to Graham Booth (who realistically is a Division 1 player) and Luke won 1 as the 5th Team went down to a 7-3 home defeat.

Week 3 saw 4 of our 5 teams in action as the 4th team had a week off.

In the Premier Division, after two consecutive 8-2 defeats, the first team of Greig, Colin and Iain faced the newly promoted Edinburgh University in what, even at this early stage in the season, looked like a must win match. University’s Number 1 player this year is of course our former 1st team player, Ian Johnston. A strange decision taken by Ian however as he dropped himself from the match and the night turned out to be much more comfortable than had been expected as the 1st team ran away with the match 9-1. Greig and Colin won their 3 singles matches and combined for a good win in the doubles, whilst Iain picked up his first wins in the Premier Division by winning two of his three matches. The win sees the 1st Team climb four places in the Premier Division and leaves University in trouble at the foot of the table.

After their first loss in over a year, the second Team were hoping to bounce back immediately in their home tie against West Lothian 5 in Division 2. It turned out to be a somewhat controversial night as West Lothian failed to arrive on time and when they did arrive gave no real explanation or apology for not vein there until 7pm - not to mention only two players seemed to have arrived with their 3rd player "on his way"! The away team's attitude did them no favours and after a discussion with Team Captain Brian Bailey they ultimately conceded the match 10-0.

After two excellent wins had put the third Team joint top of Division 2, James, Gary and Abby faced a tricky away match in Bathgate to West Lothian 6. The trio started the night brilliantly as they raced into a 4-0 lead and looked in complete control. However, losses in the next 3 matches brought West Lothian back in to the tie. The final three games of the night, however  were all won by Penicuik as they continued their great start to the season with a 7-3 win. Gary won all his 3 matches while James and Abby both won 2. The win keeps Penicuik at the top of the Division.

In the newly formed Division 4, Penicuik’s 5th Team had their second outing of the season as they faced one of the League’s new Clubs, Fife. The home side completely rejigged their team from their opening fixture with Rachel Petrie, Kathryn McKenzie and Louis McLeod all making their debuts in the League. After an excellent win in their first match this tie proved more difficult as they went down to an 8-2 defeat. Both Kathryn and Louis however can take positives from the night as they both won 1 game against their far more experienced opponents.
