ELTTL Week 11 Report

30/11/2014

After a confidence boosting run of three consecutive wins, Penicuik 1 of Greig McDonell, Colin Green and Iain Johnstone came back down to earth with a bump as they slumped to a disappointing 9-1 away defeat to the hands of Murrayfield 2. The only win of the night came in the doubles where Greig and Colin teamed up and continued their excellent doubles form, the pair having only lost 1 of their previous 9 doubles matches. The loss halts the 1st Team’s climb up the Premier Division but a win in their last match of the 1st half next week should see them go into the Festive Break in a safe mid-table position.

With Penicuik 2 not playing, the 3rd Team had a chance to play their match in hand in Division 2 as they faced their trickiest test of the season when they visited Edinburgh International 5. EI5 sat in 3rd place, just behind the Ladywood trio of James Wighton, Gary Mcdougal and Abby Wighton going into the match. After the first round of singles matches the visitors held a 2-1 lead (wins for Abby & Gary) but following losing two of the next 3 (James being the only winner) the match was evenly poised at 3-3 going into the final 4 games. When James and Abby defeated the home side’s previously unbeaten doubles pairing the match looked like swinging the way of the visitors but the home side fought back with George Oliver beating Abby to tie the match again at 4-4. Gary won match 9 leaving James to face wily old campaigner, Jack Ought in the last match of the night. It wasn't to be for James as he went down to a 3-1 defeat as the match was tied  5-5. A point, however, was good enough for Penicuik to see them go top of the Division for the first time this season, a point clear of Penicuik 2, with the big match only 3 days away!!!

In Division 3, Penicuik 4 were looking for a 4th consecutive win as they travelled to take on Edinburgh International 6. Remarkably, for the first time this season, Team 4 fielded the same three players as the previous week's fixture as Gregory Leplatre, Tony Brentnall and Gavin Hunter combined for a 6-4 win to keep their momentum going in the 4th Division. Tony was player of the night winning all three of his singles matches whilst Gregory and Gavin both won 1 and Gavin and Tony paired up for a crucial win in the doubles. The result sees the 4th Team continue their push up the table as they now sit equal 3rd in Division 3.

After a disappointing few weeks for the very inexperienced Penicuik 5 Team, they returned to winning ways with an impressive 7-3 victory over Edinburgh International 8. Gregory Leplatre who had played up for the 4th Team earlier in the week comfortably won his 3 singles matches but the player of the night was 11 year old Luke Hennessey who also won his three singles matches. Rachel Petrie added 1 win as the 5th Team won their first match since the first week of the season.

Picture
Week 10 saw all of the Club's Teams in action and it was another good week for the Club with only the 5th Team failing to record a victory.

After two wins the previous week the 1st Team of Greig McDonell, Colin Green and Iain Johnstone hosted Murrayfield 3 in Week 10. After losses in games 1 and 4 of the night for Iain and Greig respectively, the match looked like being a tight affair as it was poised at 2-2. Game 5 proved to be crucial as Iain defeated the far more experienced Colin Clark in three straight ends and that set the tone for the rest of the night as the home side never looked back as they raced to an 8-2 victory. Colin won 3 whilst Iain and Greig both won 2 (Iain's best performance of the season thus far). Three wins on the bounce sees the 1st Team move up the Premier Division Table into 6th place.

In Division 2, the 2nd Team travelled to Bathgate to take on West Lothian 6. Clive's remarkable undefeated run continued as both he and Brian Bailey were on top form winning their 3 singles matches. John contributed as he teamed up with Clive in the doubles for a win as the 2nd Team recorded an excellent 7-3 win.

The 3rd Team hosted Corstorphine and the home team’s player of the night was Abby Wighton as she won all three of her singles matches for the first time this season. Dad James Wighton and Gary McDougal both won two in Penicuik’s 7-3 victory. The 3rd team remain undefeated this season and firmly keep the pressure on Penicuik 2 at the top of the Division. The next two weeks sees crucial matches for the 3rd Team as they take on Edinburgh International, currently sitting third in the Division, followed by the eagerly awaited tie against Penicuik 2 in the last week before the festive break.

The 4th Team matched the 1st Team’s run of form as they too secured their third straight win with an impressive 10-0 demolition of Edinburgh University 3 in Division 3. In to the Team this week came Gregory Leplatre to join forces with Tony Brentnall and Gavin Hunter. The trio were never troubled as they dominated the match. The last few weeks have seen a remarkable turn around for the 4th Team as they have rocketed up the table to a fourth place position going into the last two weeks of the first half of the season.

The 5th Team continue to find life difficult in Division 4 and after two heavy defeats in their last two matches, Rachel Petrie, Louis McLeod and Louis Myatt travelled to face Edinburgh University 4. The visitors were no match for a strong student side as they went down to their second 10-0 whitewash defeat of the season.

ELTTL Week 9 Report

Week 9 of the Edinburgh & Lothians Table Tennis League saw all of the Club's five teams in action.

With two matches in three days, the 1st Team of Greig McDonell, Colin Green and Iain Johnstone knew that a couple of good results would ease the mounting pressure which had built as a result of only 1 win in their previous 6 league matches. Their first match of the week saw the trio travel to face Edinburgh International 2 in a must win encounter. For the first time this season, both Greig and Colin played well in the same match as they won all three of their singles matches and combined for a win in the doubles for an excellent 7-3 victory. Two days later North Merchiston 2 visited Ladywood. The fixture saw the return to the Club of David Melrose, now playing for North Merchiston. Could David come back to haunt his former teammates? Iain, had been extremely disappointed by his performance against Edinburgh International and went into the first match of the night low in confidence against North Merchiston’s Number 2, Eddie Scott. His win in five ends, however, was a real boost and set the tone for the night. David found both Greig and Colin too strong as they both continued their excellent week winning all three of their singles and again combining for a win in the doubles. The resulting 8-2 victory and 4 points in a week sees the 1st Team jump 3 places in the Division and provides some breathing space over the teams below.

In Division 2, the 2nd Team faced a home tie against Murrayfield 6. In the continued absence of Ian Woodyer, the 2nd Team called up John Bald who provided excellent support to Clive Liddiard and Brian Bailey. Clive continued his amazing run of form as his 100% individual record remained intact with a further 3 singles wins. Brian and John both won 2 and with Clive and John winning the doubles the home team ran out easy 8-2 winners.

Penicuik 3 faced a tricky away encounter at West Lothian 5. The 3rd Team of James Wighton, Gary McDougal and Abby Wighton were determined to keep up the pressure on Penicuik’s 2nd Team at the top of the Division. With both Gary and James winning two and Abby contributing with 1 win, the crucial match of the night turned out to be the doubles fixture. The father and daughter team of James and Abby joined forces in what turned out to be an epic encounter. Having lost the first end, James and Abby rallied to win the next two to only for West Lothian to win the 4th end and tie the game at 2-2. In the deciding fifth end, James and Abby managed to hold their nerve as they won the decider by 11 points to 9 thus maintaining the 3rd team’s undefeated start to the season with a terrific 6-4 win.

There was further good news for Penicuik’s 2 representatives in Division 2 as their closest challengers, Edinburgh International 5 slipped up with a 5-5 draw leaving the Penicuik teams two points clear at the top of the Division. The 3rd Team still hold the advantage however with a game in hand on their more senior Clubmates.

After an excellent 9-1 win last week, Penicuik 4 were looking to record back to back victories for the first time this season as they faced a home tie against Corstorphine 6. In to the team this week came Krzysztof Laszkiewicz to join forces with Tony Brentnall and Gavin Hunter. After an excellent doubles win for Gavin and Tony, the match looked over with Penicuik holding a 5-2 lead but after Kris lost narrowly in five ends to his opposite number and Tony then lost to Corstorphine’s undefeated JP Smith, suddenly the pressure was all on Gavin as he played the final match of the night. Gavin proved too strong for his opponent winning in four ends to give the home side a nervy, but well deserved, 6-4 victory. A great couple of weeks for the 4th Team has seen them jump into 5th place with only a poorer game difference keeping them out of 3rd place.

The only blight on an otherwise excellent week for the Club came in Division 4 as Penicuik’s new 5th Team hosted West Lothian. The inexperience of Kathryn McKenzie, Louis Myatt and Lewis Baldock showed as they came up against far more experienced opponents. All three of Penicuik’s youngsters found the match hard going but in the final match, Kathryn produced the performance of the night as she won an excellent deciding end against Ros Beck as the 5th Team went down to a 9-1 defeat.

ELTTL Week 8 Report

After a break for the League Cup Competition it was back to League Action for 4 of Penicuik’s 5 Teams in Week 8 of the Edinburgh & Lothians Table Tennis League.

Penicuik’s 1st Team of Greig McDonell, Colin Green and Iain Johnstone hosted last season's surprise package  Edinburgh Sports Club desperate for change of fortune after a disappointing start to this season's Premier Division campaign. After a narrow loss in their last outing against the reigning Champions, North Merchiston, the 1st Team were hopeful that a good performance could kick start their season. Unfortunately, however, the 1st Team could only convert 1 out of 5 five enders into a win and that came in the doubles where Greig and Colin overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat two of the Leagues top players, Graeme Sutherland and John Hannah. If the 1st Team only played doubles matches they would be atop of the League but unfortunately none of the home team could win a singles match as they went down to a heavy 9-1 defeat. The scoreline doesn't reflect how tight the match was, however, with Greig being particularly unlucky losing all 3 of his matches in tight deciding ends.  The loss leaves the 1st Team in a precarious position, 3rd bottom of the Division and with a big week coming up in Week 9 as they play two matches against teams also struggling to put points on the board.

There is much better news in Division 2 for the Club.  Penicuik 2 now top the Division after an impressive 7-3 away win against Corstorphine 3. The 2nd Team called on the services of Tony Brentnall again and Tony turned out to be the player of the night winning all 3 of his singles matches.  Clive Liddiard maintained his remarkable form, remaining undefeated this season and all of last, winning his 3 singles matches whilst Brian Bailey was no doubt disappointed to only pick up 1 win.

Penicuik 3 of James Wighton, Gary McDougal and Abby Wighton then strived to maintain their 100% record in the Division as they hosted Corstorphine 4. Gary was on top form winning his 3 singles, whilst James added 2 and Abby contributed 1 win. James and Abby teamed up to win the crucial doubles as the 3rd Team matched the 2nd Team with a 7-3 victory. With League Leaders Edinburgh International not in action both teams leapfrogged into 1st and 2nd place in the Division. The 3rd Team still hold the upper hand, however, as although currently in second place on the same points as Penicuik 2 they have a game in hand on their Clubmates and a point ahead of Edinburgh International.

A good week for the Club was rounded off by Penicuik 4’s biggest win of the season as they ran out 9-1 winners against Edinburgh International 7 in Division 3. A new look 4th Team of Phil Daly, Tony Brentnall and Gavin Hunter (made his first appearance of the season) were far too strong for their hosts as Tony and Phil both won 3 and Gavin won 2 of his 3 singles matches. Tony and Gavin combined for a win in the doubles. The victory moves the 4th Team to mid table safety and they can now relax and look upwards, the win leaving Penicuik 4 only 2 points below 3rd place in what is looking like a very tight and hard fought Division.

Away from the League, a number of the Club's youngsters competed in the Borders Table Tennis Challenge Event held at Kelso High School on Saturday 8th November. The main prize went to Luke Hennessey who defeated clubmate, Louis Myatt in a tight final. Well done to all who took part.
