After a terrific Week 10 it was back down to earth with a bump for the Club in Week 11 as five of our 7 Teams in action fell to defeats.

Starting with the positives, Team 4 continue to impress in Division 2 as they maintained their undefeated record with a tight 6-4 win against LBPTT at Ladywood. Tony Brentnall, Chris Markey and Krzysztof Lazkiewicz looked like they were coasting to another comfortable win as they raced into a 3-0 lead but two of those three wins (Tony & Kris) were won by the tightest of margins in the fifth ends. With 3 of the next four matches going the way of the visitors, the match was suddenly evenly poised at 4-3 for the league leaders going in to the final set of singles matches. Chris ensured a point with a victory in Game 8 but back came LBPTT with a win in game 9 to leave Tony to try and win the match in the final game of the night. At 2-0 up it looked like plain sailing for Tony but Lester Knibb for the visitors had other ideas winning the next two - Tony however held his nerve in the deciding end to win the match and with it retain the team's status as Division 2 Leaders. On the night, Tony won 3, Chris 2 and Kris 1.

In the Premier Division, after a 10-0 win in Week 10, Team 1 were looking to win consecutive league matches for only the second time this season. The Team were again without Colin Green but Iain Johnstone proved to be an able deputy as he joined forces with Greig McDonell and Stuart Gow to face a home match against an understrength Edinburgh International 2. The first match of the night was to prove crucial as Iain played some great stuff in defeating Struan Henderson, his win easing the pressure on Greig and Stuart. On the night all 3 players won 2 and Greig & Stuart combined for a comeback doubles win as the 1st Team ran out 7-3 winners.

Unfortunately, the good news in Week 11 ends there. In Division 1, Team 2 of James Wighton, Gary McDougal and Abby Wighton faced a tough match against a very strong Fife side who included former Scottish Number 1 Sarah Kenhard. The Penicuik trio were never really in the match as they fell to a 10-0 defeat. Meanwhile Team 3 were looking to build on their win from the previous week as they faced an away trip to Bathgate to play West Lothian 3. Iain Johnstone was lost to the Team through illness and so in stepped Chris Markey to join Brian Bailey and Clive Liddiard. The first 3 matches of the night all went the way of the Bathgate side but the next 3 were all won by the visitors. When Clive and Brian won the doubles in five ends it looked positive for Team 3 but all three of the last singles matches were lost resulting in a 6-4 defeat - one that got away from the Team it would appear especially the you consider that all 3 players won triumphed against different opponents.

In Division 3, Team 5 of John Bald, Phil Daly and Martyn Levy faced a difficult match away to Murrayfield 7. Phil, despite only winning one end on the night, reports that he in particular was extremely unlucky with numerous nets and edges going against him - and maybe he's right because despite John being the only winner on the night for Team 5 in their 9-1 defeat, Phil somehow won the Player of the Match Award!!

Perhaps the most disappointing result of the week came in Division 4 as Team 6 played against a two man University 4 side. When Luke Hennessy won the first match of the night the home side effectively held a 4-0 lead but with neither Louis Myatt nor Louis McLeod able to get on the scoresheet the University side stormed back to take a 5-4 lead with only the doubles remaining. Luke and Louis McLeod saw the match disappear from them in 3 straight ends - a remarkable recovery from the University duo and a disastrous turnaround for our young guns.

Also in Division 4, Team 7 visited University 5. On a bit of a high after a good performance against Team 6 the previous week, only Millie Bennett was able to continue from where she'd left off with two good wins. Dad Stuart and Craig Johnson were winless on the night as the team succumbed to an 8-2 defeat.

Player of the week this week was a fairly straightforward choice - only 1 Penicuik player was undefeated in singles play and his 3 included the match winning game which helped Team 4 stay at the top of the Division 2 table - no competition really as Tony Brentnall runs away with the award - Well done Tony.

And finally to this week's Controversy of the week. With schedules tight for many clubs and availability of premises at a premium, under the spotlight is the ELTTL Rule on Concessions. It looks as if our Team 8 are going to have to concede one of their outstanding fixtures. Despite the good grace of our friends from West Lothian in consenting to a last minute postponement a few weeks ago, Team 8 are struggling to get two players to play the rearranged fixture. In the days before the rule change, a Team could turn up with a one player team and play a meaningless match - we understand why it was thought that such should be akin to a concession. The real issue with the new rule is that in addition to having a 10-0 defeat recorded against you, any team who isn't able to field at least two players is also punished by a point deduction from their total. Isn't a 10-0 defeat punishment enough? What is the rationale behind this "double punishment". There will genuinely be times when a Team simply isn't able to fulfil a fixture. In the face of this Rule all that we as a club strive to do is pull players up from the lower divisions to at least form a two man team - is that really any better for the opposition - a Division 4 player turning out in a Premier or Division 1 match to save a point being deducted? Of course in this instance Team 8 (our final team in the league) have no one to call up from below so it seems that they will simply have to suffer the 10-0 defeat and a deduction from their League total. Maybe we should just do away with postponements altogether - that's maybe a discussion for another time....

Week 10 of the Edinburgh & Lothians League was an excellent one for the Club, in fact the best week (in terms of results) thus far this season. All 8 of our Teams were in action and only one side fell to a defeat.

After three defeats on the bounce for Team 1 Greig McDonell, Colin Green & Stuart Gow knew that their match against Murrayfield 4 was a must win. The first three matches set the tone for the night. Greig defeated Stuart Wilson in 4 ends followed by a win in 3 for Colin against Gary McIntyre before Stuart took 4 ends of fast and furious TT to defeat Richard Tallaron. There were three five enders on the night all of which went the way of the visitors as they recorded a 10-0 win against their Murrayfield opponents. One of those matches where no doubt the losers would have gone away thinking how on earth did we not win a single match!!

In Division 1, both Teams 2 and 3 were in action. Team 2 travelled to Edinburgh University sitting at the foot of the table after a horrid run of 6 defeats in their last 7 matches. Their opponents were just above them in the table on game difference but with 3 matches in hand. When James Wighton lost the first match of the night 11-7 in the deciding end it looked like being another night of close run things for Team 2. Match 2 was crucial and decided by the smallest of margins as Gary came back from 2-1 down to win ends 4 and 5 by an 11-9 scoreline. Another win for Gary and a win for James put the teams level at 3-3 as they entered the doubles fixture. Abby and Gary played well together as they defeated their opposite numbers in 4 ends to give the visitors a 4-3 advantage going into the final round of singles, Abby (who couldn't find her form on the night) lost her final match before James and Gary took centre stage with wins in their final games to secure a 6-4 victory which lifted the Team two places above their opponents in the Division.

Whilst that match was going on, Team 3 (Brian Bailey, Clive Liddiard and Iain Johnstone) reversed their fixture against West Lothian 4. The season thus far has been a bit of a struggle following the step up to Division 1. Brian, who has been short on form in recent weeks, again failed to contribute on the night but fortunately, Clive and Iain were on good form as they were both undefeated and combined for a win in the doubles as the visitors recorded a well deserved 7-3 win.

Into Division 2 where Team 4 went into Week 10 leading the Division. They faced a home tie (without any more Zumba to distract them - hurray!!) against Edinburgh International 5. Tony Brentnall, Chris Markey and Krzysztof Laszkiewicz knew they couldn't afford any slip ups with Murrayfield 5 having gone temporarily into the lead with a 10-0 win earlier in the week. Things were made easier for the home side as EI fielded a two man team but the home trio made no mistakes in matching their closest opponents result as they recorded a 10-0 win to maintain the lead in the division by a single point.

In Division 3, Team 5 of John Bald, Phil Daly and Gregory Leplatre travelled to face Edinburgh International 6. In a one sided contest, the surprise of the night was that the only match lost by the visitors was lost by Gregory in 3 straight ends as Team 5 recorded an excellent 9-1 away victory. Whilst individually Gregory still leads the way for the season having won 66% of his matches played, John and Phil are now both comfortably above the 50% mark.

In Division 4 the second Derby of the season took place as the young guns of Team 6, Luke Hennessy, Louis Myatt and Louis McLeod faced Team 7 of Stuart Bennett, Craig Johnson and Millie Bennet (returning after breaking her finger). Team 6 went into the match as favourites having won four of their last five matches and they sat 5 points ahead of their Club-mates. Luke got the young guns off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win against Stuart. Match 2 saw Craig take on Louis Myatt in a see-saw battle that went the distance with Craig surprisingly coming out on top 11-7 in the deciding fifth end. That was then followed by an equally tight match between Millie and Louis Mc with Millie victorious 11-8 in the deciding end. Luke then brought the scores level again before yet another 5 end tussle as Stuart came out on top against Louis Mc. When Millie then defeated Louis Myatt, Team 7 held a surprising 4-2 lead going into the doubles. Luke and Louis have played well together in recent doubles matches and they combined again to keep Team 6 in with a chance of victory but when Craig defeated Louis Mc in match 8 Team 7 held an unassailable 5-3 lead. The last two matches saw Luke continue his excellent run of form with a 4 end victory against Millie before Louis Myatt salvaged a draw with a straight sets victory against Stuart. A tight match and honours even in the end. Team 6 will rue the fact that all 3 five end matches went the way of Team 7.

The only blip on an otherwise excellent week for the Club was provided by Team 8. Kathryn McKenzie, Sean Lennon and Lewis Baldock were outplayed by a strong North Merchiston 6 (equal top of the Division) as they fell to a third whitewash defeat of the season. Important matches coming up for Team 8 with their intra Club fixtures against Teams 6 and 7.

And so to player of the Week for Week 10. Luke again impressed for Team 6 as his run of good form continued and there were strong performances from Clive and Iain for Team 3 but winning the award this week, because of the importance of the match for the Team, is Gary Mcdougal of Team 2 - his 3 singles wins and a doubles victory made the difference on the night as Team 2 hauled themselves off the foot of the table - Well done Gary.

Finally, for our controversy of the Week this week we look at one of the Rules brought in for this year in relation to the late arrival of teams/players. Team 2 this week travelled to Edinburgh University for a 7pm start and were playing the sixth and final singles match (or so they thought) when the University's third player turned up to start playing just before 9pm!! Under the old rules, that player's matches would have been conceded and whilst there was no particular controversy on the night, probably by reason of the fact that Team 2s captain, James, is one of the nicest blokes you're likely to ever meet, it does seem crazy that this rule change results in a player being able to turn up at whatever time they want (so long as the match is still ongoing) and play their 3 singles straight off. As the University player played his final match of the night having been nicely warmed up by playing two other matches in a row, one can see the argument which could have been made had he won that last match against an opponent who had by that time been sitting out "cold" for a period. As it was he lost his final match and a 6-4 win for Team 2 ensued but.............

We're sure this wasn't the intention behind the rule change but as with many things that are tinkered with there can often be unforeseen and unfair consequences.

Week 9 Report

Picture
It was a quiet week for the Club in Week 9 of the League with five of our eight teams in action.

In Division 1, Teams 2 and 3 have both struggled following their good performances in Division 2 last year. Team 2 (James Wighton, Gary Mcdougall and Abby Wighton) took on ESC 2 at Ladywood whilst Team 3 (Clive Liddiard, Iain Johnstone and Brian Bailey) faced what looked on paper like the easier match away to Edinburgh International 3.

The pattern of near wins for James, Gary and Abby unfortunately continued as games 2, 4 and 5 of the night all went the way of ESC in the fifth and deciding ends and whilst the home side picked up ends in 8 of the 10 matches only Gary won a singles and he also combined with Abby for a victory in the doubles as they fell to an 8-2 defeat. Last years Division 2 Champions now find themselves at the foot of the Division 1 table.

Team 3 started their match level on points with their opponents and were hopeful of leapfrogging them with a victory. I don't think many thought that the contest would be quite as one sided as it turned out. Ken Benjamin was again playing up for EI 3 and having taken 2 wins playing up against Team 2 the previous week, he again surprised Penicuik opposition with 2 more wins, only Iain managing a win against him. With Charlie Brindley and Xiao Han (where did EI find him?) both undefeated, Team 3 fell to an extremely disappointing 9-1 defeat.

Better news in Division 2 as Team 4 going into Week 9 at the top of the table came out still on top after a good 8-2 victory against Corstorphine 3. The scoreline doesn't do justice to how close some of the matches were as the Penicuik trio of Chris Markey, Krzysztof Lazkiewicz and Tony Brentnall won 3 out of the four 5 enders on the night. Chris in particular showed his steel winning two of his three matches deuce in the fifth. Tony was player of the night for the visitors not dropping an end whilst Kris was unlucky, his only loss being a deuce in the fifth defeat to Steve Chalmers. The result puts Team 4 a point clear of Murrayfield 5 at the top of the table.

Into Division 3 and Team 5 faced a home tie against North Merchiston 4 - two youngsters and the not so young Graham Booth faced John Bald, Gregory Leplatre and Phil Daly. Two turning points on the night, firstly young David Hale beating Phil in 3 straight ends and then in the very next match, the doubles, the two youngsters coming back from 2-1 down to defeat John and Gregory. In the end Gregory needed 4 ends to defeat young David in the final match of the night to secure a draw - he and John won 2 whilst Phil won 1.

And finally into Division 4 where the young guns of Team 6 faced North Merchiston 5 who sat two places above them in the Division 4 table. Team 6 came into the match on a bit of a roll having won 3 of their last four matches and that good form continued, particularly for Luke Hennessey and Louis Myatt, as they both won 3 and combined for a good doubles win. Louis McLeod added 1 singles win as the home side were victorious by an 8-2 scoreline, a result which sees them leapfrog their opponents and jump into third place in the Division 4 table. It was good to see so many youngsters competing at the Club this week.

And so to our player of the Week Award. Some good performances again - Tony had an excellent night in Division 2 but having knocked on the door for so many of the last few weeks the award goes to our young gun, Luke Hennessey, for yet another excellent performance in winning his 3 and combining for a doubles win. Looking at the Division 4 standings, he has now won 15 out of 21 matches played this season and has won 13 of his last 15 as Team 6 have risen to third place in the Division. Well done Luke.

Finally, controversy of the week. Can I really keep this going for 24 weeks...... Illegal services! In fairness the writer can't get too involved in this debate given his "questionable serves" but it came to a head today at the Vets tournament as an over 40s player was widely criticised for his "illegal serves". That led Drew McLaren to tell of how he was called up by our own 4th Team for an illegal serve at what he saw as a crucial point in a match. And that's the problem - if you don't call it early in a match is it ever fair to call it later? The vast majority of us probably have some serves which would not stand up under close scrutiny from a qualified umpire - some games wouldn't have any rallies at all!! Should we be too bothered about the serves? - we play the game socially and at a level that is far short of anything that could be described as "top quality"! How many of us in the league have actually gone through any umpiring qualifications? Probably not too many and yet we expect our teammates or opponents to pick up on these rule infractions - all I know is that when it does become an issue it doesn't do anything to promote sportsmanship and fair play.

Week 8 Report

Seven of the Club’s eight teams were in action in Week 8 of the Edinburgh & Lothians League.

Penicuik’s 1st Team were at full strength for the first time in four weeks as they faced an away trip to play last years Premier Division Runners-up West Lothian 1. Greig McDonell, Colin Green and Stuart Gow got off to the worst possible start losing the first three singles matches of the night. After a win each from Greig and Colin in the next three singles they were 4-2 down going into the crucial doubles. Greig and Colin have an excellent doubles record but were outplayed by Darius and Brian (not for the first time) and with that loss the chances of turning the night around ebbed away. Colin kept the tie alive with a victory agains Russell Swan but in the last two matches, Greig struggled to contain the attacking play of Darius whilst Brian's style proved too difficult for Stuart to overcome as Team 1 slid to a disappointing 7-3 defeat.

In Division 1, Team 2 of James Wighton, Gary McDougal and Abby Wighton got the week off to a good start with a much needed point as they drew 5-5 in their away tie at Edinburgh International 4. Abby was the player of the night for the visitors with two wins whilst James and Gary both won 1. The point was secured as Abby and Gary combined for a crucial win in the doubles. Things weren't so good later in the week though as the same trio visited a Team who are surely favourites for the Division 1 Title, West Lothian 2. As Greig, Colin and Stuart were struggling at one end of the hall, Team 2 found the going even tougher against Stan Stoodley, Amjad Mohammed and Dave Fletcher. Only 4 ends won on the night for the visitors as they were swept aside 10-0.

In Division 2, Team 4 were undefeated going into week 8 but with 3 draws in their opening 6 matches they sat in third place and two points behind league leaders Edinburgh Sports Club 3, whom they faced in a crucial match at Ladywood. When Gavin Hunter lost the first match of the night in five tight ends the pressure was on the home side but two wins from Chris Markey and one each from Krysztof Laszkiewicz and Gavin gave the home side a 4-2 advantage going into the doubles fixture. In what turned out to be a crucial match Chris and Krysztof came back from 2 ends down to win the doubles 11-9 in the fifth and deciding end. Chris, who was undefeated on the night, secured both points in match 8 of the night with his 3rd singles win as Team 4 ran out 6-4 winners. A fantastic result for the Team which sees them leapfrog (albeit only on game difference) ESC to the top of the Division 2 table.

In Division 3 Team 5 fell to their 4th defeat of the season as they lost out 6-4 to Corstorphine 5. With Martyn Levy failing to record a win, John Bald and Phil Daly knew they would need to be on top form. What was probably most disappointing for John and Phil is that they both lost to different players on the night, Phil in 4 ends to Jim Lee (who John defeated 3-0 including an 11-1 win!) whilst John lost to Dougie Smith in 3 straight ends who fell to Phil in 4 ends. It's all about styles! A point was still a possibility but that went as John and Phil lost the doubles 11-9 in each end.

All three of the Club's Division 4 teams were in action in Week 8. After a dreadful start to the season, Team 6 have won two of their last 3 matches and the young trio of Luke Hennessey, Louis Myatt and Louis McLeod were in confident mood as they faced an away match against Murrayfield 8. With Louis McLeod having an off night it was left to Luke with 3 wins and Louis Myatt with 2 to secure 5 wins on the night. That was converted to a third win in four weeks as the same duo combined to win an excellent doubles match resulting in a terrific 6-4 victory for the Club's youngest side (a combined age of 36)!!

Elsewhere in Division 4 Team 7 called on the services of Team 8's Sean Lennon to combine with regulars Craig Johnson and Stuart Bennett as they faced North Merchiston 6. Sean was the only winner on the night with two wins as they lost out 8-2.

Sean was then in action again for his own team as Team 8 faced an away tie against Haddington 2. He again won 2 and that was added to by two wins for Lewis Baldock and 1 win for Kathryn McKenzie as Team 8 gained a much needed boost with a 5-5 draw against their East Lothian opponents.

Two players were in the running for the player of the week award this week - just losing out was young Luke Hennessey, but because of the importance and pressure of the match, for the second time this season, the award goes to Chris Markey, his 3 wins and a doubles victory helping Team 4 reach the summit of the Division 2 table. Well done Chris and the rest of the team.

And finally it's pleasing to note that there were no real controversies this week, unless we include Team 3's decision to be sporting in allowing a postponement to their Fife opponents who were only able to field 1 player!! Surely that's not controversial is it??? Probably not a controversy but definitely a surprise when you realise that it was Brian agreeing to the postponement!!! He's obviously mellowing in his old age...

Week 7 Report

Picture
Week 7 saw a break from League action as the Club entered 4 teams in the annual Handicap Cup Competition. The last two seasons have seen success for the Club with Greig McDonell, Iain Johnstone and Abby Wighton combining to win the Cup for the first time in the Club’s history in Season 2013/14 and reaching the semi-finals last season. With a pool of almost 30 players to select from, the Club were hoping for another good Cup run this year.

Penicuik 1 were drawn at home against Corstorphine 2 in Round 1. Potential controversy was averted after Corstorphine failed to turn up on the scheduled Wednesday night having seemingly never received email confirmation of the match as it was agreed at haste to play the match the next night. Team 1 was made up of Brian Bailey (-1), Clive Liddiard (-4) and Sean Lennon (+7) and they faced JP Smith (Scratch), Tom Wallace (-3) and Tommy Sutherland (+7). At 2-0 down the home side looked in trouble but Sean got them on the scoreboard with an important win in match 3 against Tommy. Match 4 was to prove crucial between Clive and JP with Clive giving his opponent a 4-0 start to 15. It looked plain sailing for Clive with wins in the first two ends but back came JP to win the next 2. In the deciding 5th end, the handicaps were proven to be accurate as the match went the distance with Clive edging it 15-13 to level the match scores at 2-2. With further wins for Sean and Clive the hosts led 4-3 going into match 8 of the night as Sean took on JP. Sean, making his debut in the Competition, was the difference between the teams on the night, as he romped home in three straight ends to give the home side an excellent 5-3 win. Sean won all 3 of his singles matches and Clive won 2.

Penicuik 2 saw Phil Daly (+5) combine with two players from Division 4, Craig Johnson (+7) and Stuart Bennett (+7) as they faced a trip to Haddington who also had a team of high handicaps with their three players being +4, +6 and +7. This match was more like an ordinary League match which probably didn't help the Penicuik trio. At 2-1 down, Craig took on his opposite number in what turned out to be the closest and most crucial match of the night. From 2 ends to 1 down, Craig did well to level the game with a terrific 11-3 win in end 4 but he was unable to secure a win in the deciding end as he lost out by the narrowest of margins 11-9. That gave the home side a 2 match advantage which they would never lose. On the night Phil was by far the best player for visitors, winning all 3 of his singles matches, but neither Craig nor Stuart were able to support him as Team 2 went down to a 5-3 defeat.

The draw was somewhat unkind to the Club in that it pitted Penicuik 3 against Penicuik 4 in Round 1. It was no surprise that Greig (-13), Iain (-8) and Abby (-2) were again selected to play this season as Penicuik 3. Challenging them as Penicuik 4, was John Bald (+3), Martyn Levy (+6) and Luke Hennessey (+6).

The 3rd team quickly went 2-0 up as Abby secured a 4 end victory against John and then Greig overcame a 0-19 deficit to defeat Martyn in 3 ends. The next 4 matches were shared. Luke always looked dangerous with a +6 handicap and so it proved as he defeated Iain and Abby to cut the deficit to 4-2. Match 7 saw Luke take on Greig and when Greig won the first end 24-22 it looked like the match was going to be over. Young Luke had other ideas, however, as he played positive table tennis to win the next 3 ends thus keeping his team in contention at 4-3 down going into the final two matches of the night. With time running out, both matches were played simultaneously with Iain taking on John whilst Abby faced Martyn. Iain looked in complete control as he won the first two ends but back came John to win the next two and the match was on a knife edge. Meanwhile, Abby and Martyn had shared the first 4 ends of their match. Greig looked very nervous trying to keep an eye on both the final end shootouts to decide who would progress to Round 2. In the tightest of finishes, both Abby and Iain just got over the line in their deciding fifth ends, 19-17 and 13-11 respectively to secure victory for the 2013/14 Champions by a 6-3 scoreline.

So two teams through to Round 2 and probably time to throw into the mix some of the Club's other youngsters with high handicaps.

In the League, Team 2 of James Wighton, Gary Mcdougall and Abby Wighton caught up on one of their outstanding fixtures as they travelled to take on Edinburgh International 3. A difficult start to the season for last year's Division 2 Champions continued as only James managed to get on the scoreboard with a victory against Ken Benjamin in a disappointing 9-1 defeat. Their match in Week 8 against the team just above them in the League, Edinburgh International 4 now takes on even greater significance.

Controversy of the Week this week? Almost a fallout between Brian and Clive's team and Corstorphine (have Brian and Clive ever been the subject of controversy before - surely not!!) - but resolved in a sporting fashion by agreeing to play the match the night after it ought to have been. Blame must rest a little bit with the league - las year it was clear that the Handicap Cup games were to be played (unless otherwise agreed) on the normal home night of the home team - that at least provided certainty as to what was happening. For some reason this year we appear to have fallen back into the way of previous seasons where the home team should propose a day during the handicap Cup week but we are still told that the Cup games should be played in that week! For clubs like ours who only have limited access to premises this doesn't really seem to make sense. Anyway, alls well that ends well!

And finally the Player of the week award this week was between three players. Young Luke Hennessey and the not so young Phil Daly were most definitely in the running for their maximums in losing sides, but because his wins helped his team to victory, the award goes to Sean Lennon, without whom the Club would have been down to only one team through to Round 2 of the Cup. El Presidente takes all the credit for Sean's 3 wins as a result of knocking up with him over the last couple of weeks and boosting his confidence by giving him handicap games which he's won at a canter!! Well done Sean.
