So here we are with our promised Week 27 Report – PTTC are all finished but as reported last week there were a couple of outstanding issues still to be resolved in Week 27. First up in Division 3 was the “Committee ordered” replay of the match between Corstorphine and Haddington. Going into the match Corstorphine needed a win or a draw to maintain their Division 3 survival whilst a win for Haddington would see them survive at the expense of their opponents. The original match where Haddington had wrongly been prevented from playing a third player resulted in a 6-4 win for Corstorphine.  The replay was nowhere near as tight – only two games on the night went to five ends, both won by Haddington. But Corstorphine were never really in the match as the East Lothian outfit ran out 9-1 winners. A big decision by the Committee and a huge impact on Corstorphine who end up relegated to Division 4.

In Division 2 there was drama at both ends of the table. As reported last week, Haddington 3 had 2 matches to play, and they needed a win or two draws for them to leapfrog ESC into safety. A 9-1 win v North Merchiston 5 on Tuesday 2nd April proved enough as they survived on game difference, ESC falling into the relegation places.

At the top of the Division there was real drama. We mentioned last week that a win for Edinburgh University in their outstanding match v Haddington would secure second place for them. Thursday 4th April saw a strong team make the trip to East Lothian and a comfortable 9-1 win followed for the students as they secured the second promotion spot.

Meanwhile Heriot-Watt played faced North Merchiston on Tuesday 2nd April knowing that a win was essential to keep their season alive. A 9-1 victory for the students against Merchiston 4 saw them set up a mouth-watering visit to long time Division 2 leaders Murrayfield 8. Going into the match, Murrayfield knew that a win or a draw would be enough for them to be crowned champions. The students needed a win to pip the leaders to the title. And what a match this turned out to be – Graham Muir got the hosts off to the perfect start with a win in Match 1 and when young Max Well held a 2-1 lead in Match 2 the tie looked as if it was going in favour of the Murrayfield outfit. A 12-10 fourth end win for the HW player was followed by a deciding end win and the match was all square. The next two matches were also shared to make it 2-2. Match 5 was to prove pivotal. Graham fought back from 2-0 down to force a decider but when he lost that 11-8 the momentum swung to the students – they won the next three games to take an unassailable 6-2 lead and although the last two matches went the way of the hosts, Heriot-Watt had done enough to secure the two points needed for them to win the Division 2 title.

What a terrific finish to the season – you’ve got to feel for Murrayfield who looked in control of the division for large parts of the season. Spare a thought also for West Lothian who went into the week in the second promotion spot but finished fourth. The top 5 sides in Division 2 were split by only 3 points with 2nd, 3rd and 4th all finishing just a point behind the winners – it couldn’t have been much tighter!

As for controversies…… None that we know off – that’s a good way to finish the season! We’ll be back after the Presentation Night and Handicap Cup Final with our Season Round-Up.
