Penicuik 1 v Heriot Watt Uni (Premier Division) – Wednesday 25th March 2026
The students have had a super season and were seeking a second-place finish in the Premier Division as they faced Colin Green, Peter Aird and Ryan Docherty. The first set of singles all went the way of the visitors and when the next two matches were also picked up by the students they looked unstoppable. Peter stopped the rot with a five end victory in match 6 but the visitors didn’t have to wait long to secure the victory as they won the doubles to give them an unassailable 6-1 lead. In the last three singles, Ryan got on the board for the hosts but the night belonged to the visitors who secured an 8-2 win.
Penicuik 3 v ESC (Division 2) – Wednesday 25th March 2026
Team 3 were due to host ESC in their last match of the season but the visitors couldn’t filed a team and so a 10-0 concession was awarded to the hosts.
Penicuik 5 v Murrayfield 10 (Division 4) – Wednesday 25th March 2026
Rachel Petrie and Mat Dyluk were up against it as they hosted their Murrayfield opponents – no third player for the hosts so they started 3-0 down. Rachel and Mat fought hard – a terrific win for Mat in five sets in the second game of the night and a 3-0 win for Rachel in her second match of the night were the highlights for the hosts who fell to an 8-2 defeat.
Edinburgh International 3 v Penicuik 4 (Division 3) – Wednesday 25th March 2026
It was a good job that Team 4 had already secured promotion from Division 3 because the last couple of weeks have seen a bit of a drop off in results. Ian Hislop, Chamika Diyunugalge and Patrick Shanks struggled against the Edinburgh side who were fighting to ensure they would avoid relegation. Ian won 2 and Patrick 1 as the visitors fell to a disappointing 7-3 defeat.
Dunbar v Penicuik 6 (Division 5) - Friday 27th March 2026
John Grant, Arran Fitchett and Michael Daly made the long trip to Dunbar on Friday night to bring their season to a conclusion. The Dunbar side contained three young female players (that must be a unique side in any of our divisions). All three of the visitors won 1 match but they fell to a 7-3 defeat – Girl Power!
Player of the Week
Not the easiest decision this week – the committee have had lengthy deliberations – Ian H was our best performer with two wins out of three but his team fell to a 7-3 defeat. There were numerous players who had 1 win. And it’s from that pool that we look this week. It’s always good to see new players come into the league, especially if they’re youngsters stepping up from our junior sessions. This week’s award is a bit special as its shared between two of those players – in their first seasons of competitive play well done to Michael and Arran. Both have turned out for Team 6 and brought the average age of that team down below 50!! Taking part in the league is a big step and they’ve coped well throughout the year – this week all of Team 6 won 1 and by doing just as well as the “highest rated” player in the Team, John, they deserve this week’s award – well done to them.
Controversy of the Week
A little go at ourselves this week – over the last few weeks of the season we’ve seen a number of matches played by our teams understrength. This week, Team 5 played with only two players. Week 24 saw Team 5 require a player to play up from the division below, Week 23 saw Team 2 play with just two players, Team 5 were at it again in Weeks 22 and 21, and Week 21 also saw Teams 1 and 3 play understrength whilst Team 3 played with only two players in Week 20! So in the last five weeks we have seen a real drop off in being able to get full teams out. The only teams who have managed to field full sides all season are Teams 4 and 6. Whilst we accept that players have lives, surely their TT should take precedence over whatever else they’ve got going on!! Or is it the fact that the season is meandering to a close that has impacted on player’s commitment. In fairness it’s only Team 4 that have been fighting for promotion – for team 5 for example, they’ve known their fate for a few weeks and we can see why they may not bother about having to play without a full team.
Only two teams with matches left as Teams 2 and 4 have matches in Week 26.
