nWeek 23 saw all six of our teams in action as the Edinburgh League canters towards its conclusion.

ESC v Penicuik 2 – Tuesday 10th March

The week started with a trip for an understrength Team 2 to ESC. James Wighton and Hannah McDonell made the trip and even had they had a full side they knew this was going to be a tough ask. The only good news was that the match was over fairly quickly – the highlight of the night for the visitors was an excellent five set win for Hannah against Masoud Nowbaveh. Having lost the first two ends, Hannah turned the match around winning the next three ends 12-10, 11-9, 11-4. ESC conceded the doubles so everyone could have an even quicker night as the hosts ran out 8-2 winners.

Penicuik 1 v Murrayfield 1 (Premier Division) – Wednesday 11th March 2026

Team 1 have had a terrific season and going into this match a top 4 or 5 finish was on the cards. The defending League champions were not going to win the title this year (after their point deductions) but were still trying to finish runners-up.  Colin Green, Peter Aird and Ryan Docherty took to the table for the home side. Peter was first up and lost out in five ends to Keith Dingwall but Colin then levelled the scores before Ryan had an excellent win against Gordon Muir to give the hosts the lead. The second round of matches saw Gordon defeat Peter but with both Ryan and Colin winning the hosts held a 4-2 lead going into the doubles. The crucial doubles saw Colin and Ryan secure a point for the hosts but with Gordon defeating Colin and Peter losing out in his final match it was left to Ryan to try and secure the win as he faced Keith. Having won the first end Ryan (and his teammates) were shocked to see him losing the second 11-1. He regained his composure, however, as he secured a 4 set win. A 6-4 win for the hosts was an excellent result for the Penicuik side.

Penicuik 3 v Murrayfield 8 (Division 2) – Wednesday 11th March 2026

Craig Linton, Charlie Brindley and Bob Porteous hosted Murrayfield 8 at Ladywood having drawn 5-5 in the first half, but on that occasion, they had played with only two players. Bob won match 1 before there were two crucial five set matches in games 2 and 3. Craig came back from 2-1 down to win in five before Charlie won a crucial 12-10 in the fifth encounter in match 3. With further wins for Craig and Bob to follow the hosts were 5-0 up. Charlie lost a five-set match in Game 6 and when the doubles went the way of the visitors, they were suddenly threatening a comeback. Another five-set match followed but Craig came out on top to secure the win. Charlie won match 9 before Bob lost out in the final game of the night. A 7-3 victory for the hosts.

Penicuik 5 v West Lothian 7 (Division 4) – Wednesday 11th March 2026

It was a busy night at Ladywood with Team 5 also in action. Rachel Petrie, Iain Caddell and Mat Dyluk knew they were up against it as they hosted West Lothian. It’s been an awful season for Team 5 and although this will go down in the record books as a heavy 10-0 whitewash, this was one of those matches where the score doesn’t do justice to the efforts of the hosts. Rachel in particular was unlucky – she had chances in all 3 singles matches played, losing two of them in five ends and the other in four. Iain was also unlucky losing out 11-9 in the fifth.

West Lothian 8 v Penicuik 6 (Division 5) - Wednesday 11th March 2026

John Grant, Ian Millar and Arran Fitchett travelled to Bathgate to take on the side top of the Division 5 table. The gulf between the teams showed as the West Lothian trio won the first 8 matches by a 3-0 scoreline. John has shown some terrific form recently and he decided he wasn’t going to go down without a fight as he won match 9 by a 3-0 scoreline. That was as good as it got for the visitors as the Division 5 leaders won 9-1.

West Lothian 5 v Penicuik 4 (Division 3) – Thursday 12th March 2026

The week was rounded off with Team 4’s visit to West Lothian. Aidan Craig, Chamika Diyunugalge and Ian Hislop made the trip to Bathgate. A win here would guarantee the visitors promotion if other results went their way. The first two matches were shared, a defeat for Ian and a victory for Aidan. Matches 3 and 4 were to prove crucial to the outcome. Chamika secured a tight five set victory before Ian looked down and out at 2-0 down in match 4 – he somehow pulled the match around for a 12-10 win in the fifth. Those two wins made the difference – Aidan secured an excellent undefeated night and two wins each for Chamika and Ian resulted in an excellent 7-3 win for the visitors.

Player of the Week

Ryan from Team 1, Craig from Team 3 and Aidan from Team 4 were undefeated in singles this week. Craig and Aidan both lost in the doubles fixture whereas Ryan was party of a vital doubles win. If that wasn’t enough, Ryan also won 9 ends losing only 1 whereas Aidan lost 2 and Craig lost 4. And as if that wasn’t enough, Ryan’s perfect night was against the Defending Premier League Champions and his 3 was vital in a 6-4 win. Well done to Ryan.

Controversy of the Week

Postponements always give us some good controversies. Late in the day Murrayfield 1 sought a postponement against us. Given that Murrayfield 1 have 8 players registered for them it felt a little strange that they couldn’t field a team. Colin can’t always guarantee getting 3 out of our 4 players in action and given the late stage we’re now at in the season, postponement was refused. That’s not really the controversy – Colin was told that given no postponement given it would be a combo of div 1 or div 2 players turning up at Ladywood. Really – lets wait and see about that thought our Team 1. Lo and behold, Gordon Muir (top 5 in the individual averages turns up) along with two other Premier Division players – yeah right Murrayfield!

Only a couple of weeks left - where has the time gone!
